EDINBURGH RUGBY HISTORY

Representing the capital since 1872

Edinburgh Rugby has been a beating heart in the capital of Scotland for over 150 years, developing from the amateur district side that first took the field in 1872 to the side that battles professionally at Hive Stadium today.

To commemorate the club’s 150th anniversary in 2022, Edinburgh unveiled a comprehensive history project, detailing the club’s full list of captains alongside every player to have worn the castle on their chest throughout the district and professional club’s entire existence.

In a project chronicling over 1300 players – from the very first, EM Bannerman of Edinburgh Accies in 1872 to more recent debutants like Sam Skinner (2022) – the club is now able to celebrate its extensive history, while mapping out the evolution of rugby in the Scottish capital.

The club has also been able to trace every internationalist to represent both capital and country, as well as establish every captain that has led out Auld Reekie, from Francis Moncrieff to current captain Magnus Bradbury.

In 2023 the capital added a new chapter to its history, with an inaugural women’s side competing in the Celtic Challenge. Led by captain and player #1 Sarah Denholm, the ‘History Makers’ are forging a new path for the capital.
