Edinburgh Edinburgh open their SA tour with a dispiriting defeat at Ellis Park.
Hasseim Pead snipes over the after the Lions secure lineout ball on the ER 5m line to end the game and another tough day at Ellis Park.
Despite the lead Lions are unrelenting – a big line break is just thwarted at the ER 5m. The visitors clear to half way but Lions race back once more with speed and interplay, only to be thwarted once again deep into the ER 22. Breathless stuff from the hosts.
Matt Currie takes a great line at speed, after Paul Hill bustles and spins in and out of contact to put him away with the offload.
Cammy Scott adds the extras. Another score surely the target to salvage something for another tough day at Ellis Park.
Angela Davids races in for his second score after winning the race to a ball grubbered long through – ER arguably caught trying to shepherd the ball out, only for Davids to race on to a bounce and cross the line.
Lions are never slow in coming forward and once again find themselves at the ER 5m line, this time thanks to a penalty infringement which they kick deep.
The maul set and repelled, before Bradbury gets his hands on the ball at a later contact to win the penalty and release the pressure.
Good work-rate sees us back in Lions territory – a Lions infringement allows us to kick deeper still. Edinburgh fire into their opponents, Shiel just short, before Douglas squeezes in. Conversion unsuccessful.
Charlie Shiel on for Vellacott
Cammy Scott on for Thompson
Edinburgh attack well and ear their way upfield, with Liam McConnell and Ewan Ashman contributing hard yards.
Thompson carries on and looks to offload to the supporting Bradbury but he just can’t pick it up from his toes at the 5m line. No signs of relenting from the Burgh men.
Lions capitalise on another ER error, after the men in white are turned over on their on 5m line. Lions react and send a perfectly weighted cross-field kick to dot down on the far side, before adding the extras.
Edinburgh on the attack once again but lose the ball right at the 5m line.
Lions counter and break upfield all the way to the visitor’s 5m, only for the grubber forward to evade the attacking hands as it bounces up.
Much better from the visitors and, with Ashman on as a replacement, he crosses the whitewash after a deep lineout driving maul – Ashman uses his experience to time his burrow over. Missed conversion.
Lions concede an offside penalty in the centre of the pitch so Ross Thompson sends us down field for an attacking lineout. Edinburgh asked to re-set for pre-loading the maul so we re-throw.
Back underway here in SA
It’s time for action at Ellis Park as the game gets underway in the Johannesburg sun.
