Leinster
Edinburgh We gave it everything, but it wasn’t to be in Dublin tonight. That’s all for match centre today, we’ll be back on Friday 17 April in the URC when we host Zebre at Hive Stadium.
Enjoy the remainder of your weekend!
An enthralling tie ends in defeat despite a huge team effort in Dublin. Ross Thompson scored a double, with Shiel, Currie and Graham also getting on the board. Ultimately though, the hosts proved too strong, with seven converted tries taking them to victory, with a Player of the Match performance from Tommy O’Brien.
A frantic 13-try encounter comes to an end at the Aviva. Leinster prevail to advance to the quarter-finals in a game which Edinburgh were well in for large parts.
Leinster look to reach the half century as Ioane opts for the kick and chase to release Hugo Keenan. The ball just evades him, and Brown is round on the cover. It’ll be a goal-line dropout and that’ll probably be the game.
Almost full time here in Dublin – with Leinster leading by 18. Tommy O’Brien is awarded Investec Player of the Match.
Jack Brown is on in place of Malelili Satala
Ewan Ashman’s 50th appearance is done – he’s replaced at hooker by Ollie Blyth-Lafferty.
Ben Vellacott replaces Charlie Shiel with 12 to play.
That’s a sucker punch for Edinburgh as Gibson-Park plays a flat pacy ball out to Rieko Ioane. One on one with Darcy Graham, he sells him a dummy to buy a walk-in to the line. Byrne continues his perfect afternoon with the boot [49-31].
The hosts have numbers over on the left with Ioane the spare man. As he takes a big hit from Darcy, Gibson-Park takes quick ruck ball to find replacement prop Thomas Clarkson – who battles his way to the line. The score is converted once again by Byrne [42-31].
Four points in it, everything to play for!
That’s marvellous from Freddy at the breakdown. He’s only been on a matter of minutes and he’s in over the ball to relieve the pressure at a crucial stage. By the sounds of it, his team mates approve and then some!
A second infringement on the five-metre line in as many minutes provides the opportunity for the hosts to tap and go. That they do through Sheehan, before the second carry by Van Der Flier has the legs for the line. The score is converted, and this topsy-turvy game swings again.
Glen Young comes on as Ben Muncaster picks up a nasty knock and is helped from the field.
What a kick and chase from Darcy Graham. Spotting space in the back field, he backs his pace to outrun Gibson-Park to the line. What a piece of individual brilliance. Thompson’s kick bounces back off the upright [28-31].
Mr Turnover comes into the fray – replacing Dylan Richardson.
Both sides vying for control here. Some big hits coming in from the Edinburgh defence as they front up to the waves of pressure before Furlong knocks on. In Venter and Hill’s first scrum, they win it easily, providing an easy exit for Thompson.
Venter and Hill replace Schoeman and Rae. Great shift lads!
Brilliant in defence from Edinburgh. First contact from McConnell is big – allowing Muncaster, Gilchrist and Richardson to provide support. Van Der Flier is driven upwards and the scrum will go to Edinburgh. A huge effort there.
There’s clear daylight between the hand of Van Der Flier and the ball, making it a routine decision for the officials in the end. The score remains 28-26.
Luke Pearce is checking for a potential knock-on in the grounding…
Sheehan is close to scoring Leinster’s fifth over on the far side. Instead he offloads to Van Der Flier, and although Edinburgh try to hold him up with a maul, he breaks out the other side. Byrne converts [35-26].
Strap yourselves in, we’re back underway and it’s all to play for. Let’s do this!
Four tries apiece in the opening half. Take a breath, grab a cuppa and we’ll be back shortly for the second half.
Wow, wow, wow – what is happening here? Yet another loose ball undoes Leinster as Ioane goes beyond Byrne’s short ball. Matt Currie isn’t complaining and gathers easily to reduce the arrears again. With the last act of the half, Thompson coverts to bring a scintillating opening 40 to a close [28-26].
Some quick ruck ball reaps rewards for the hosts as Gibson-Park pulls the strings. Ioane does well in the first phase before finding the hands of his full-back, who uses some slick footwork to evade Satala and Shiel to cross. Byrne converts again [28-19].
Strong work from Edinburgh to nick the ball at the lineout through McConnell. After several phases, Satala is dragged to ground after a big hit from Gibson-Park. Then in comes Sheehan with a well-timed counter-ruck to win the penalty.
In that last tackle, Langers badly rolls his ankle and has to make way. In comes Tuipulotu in the centre.
THIS IS BREATHLESS STUFF. Another intercepted Leinster pass – this time as Tommy O’Brien looks to find Gibson-Park. On the blindside Thompson was lurking to pick it off and stride between the posts. He converts easily to bring his personal tally to 14 points – everyone managing to keep up so far? [21-19].
Jimmy O’Brien finishes off a well-executed move from the maul. All stemming from the penalty against Gilchrist, that’ll be a tough one for Edinburgh to take. Byrne makes it three from three off the tee [21-12].
Despite good jackaling from Muncaster, Gilchrist is penalised on the floor for not rolling away, even though it did look as if he made a good attempt to. Leinster go to the corner…
What an individual try from Ross Thompson! Charlie Shiel feeds him from the scrum and he does all the work himself. First he sends Gibson-Park to the floor with a superb change of pace, before having the wheels to go beyond Hugo Keenan to the line himself. To top it off he converts to bring the score to a two-point game [14-12].
Some small moments going Edinburgh’s way at the moment. First Ioane knocks on intentionally before Van Der Flier does the same on the floor. Scrum for Edinburgh incoming…
On his 91st cap, it’s Shiel who gets us on the board. One slack pass was all it took – with Tadhg Furlong the Leinster offender. It’s pounced upon by Shiel who races away unchallenged to go over. Thompson fails to convert – snatching slightly at his first kick [14-5].
Much better through the midfield with Shiel, Thompson and O’Conor. Malelli Satala finds himself with ball in hand but he loses it as he looks to jink inside- Leinster scrum.
A forward pass is penalised by Luke Pearce and Shiel will put the ball amongst the bodies. There’s a brief stoppage for an injury to Hugo Keenan after he caught an accidental arm from Liam McConnell.
It’s him again – O’Brien gathers Rieko Ioane’s looping ball out to the flank and runs it in despite a last-ditch tackle from Satala. Byrne adds another two [14-0].
Leinster have found their rhythm in the opening stages, putting phases together smoothly. Gibson-Park thinks he’s in as he tries to gather Byrne’s pass – but referee Luke Pearce judges the pass forward. From the Edinburgh scrum they regain the ball quickly and will now have one of their own.
Jimmy O’Brien breaks the line in the middle before hitting the turf. Play moves quick through the arms of Gibson-Park, Sheehan and Keenan before Tommy O’Brien has the easy task of finishing in the right corner. It’s converted by Harry Byrne [7-0]
Ross Thompson gets us underway – come on Edinburgh!
It’s time for action, let’s do this!
Ewan Ashman makes his 50th appearance for the club today. Go well Ashy!
Here’s how we line up at the Aviva. There’s two changes to the side that started in Cape Town last week, with D’Arcy Rae in for Paul Hill in the front row. Ben Muncaster also comes in at the 8 for Magnus Bradbury – who’s out with an ankle injury. Grant Gilchrist takes up the captaincy in his absence.
Welcome along to match centre this Easter Sunday for our Champions Cup last 16 match against Leinster at Aviva Stadium, Dublin. It’s T-minus 30 minutes until kick off – stay tuned for all the updates right here!
