This appearance marks Nel’s first return to the capital club since hanging up his boots at the end of the 2023/24 season, concluding an illustrious 12-year spell in the Scottish capital where he became a cornerstone of the team and a firm fan favourite.
During his decade-plus of service, Nel cemented his status as one of the finest tightheads to ever represent the city.
He remains one of only four players in the history of Edinburgh Rugby to reach the prestigious milestone of 200 appearances, joining fellow greats Chris Paterson, Grant Gilchrist, and Allan Jacobsen in the exclusive ‘200 club.’
His return to the pitch on Saturday offers the perfect opportunity for the Edinburgh faithful to recognise his immense contribution to the jersey.
The occasion will be a true family celebration, as Nel will be joined on the hallowed turf by his four children to soak in the atmosphere of world rugby’s oldest inter-city derby.

WP Nel will return to deliver the match ball this Saturday.
Supporters are encouraged to be in their seats early ahead of kick-off to help pay tribute to the legendary prop and celebrate his incredible career and legacy with the club.
Reflecting on his upcoming return, Nel said: “I am incredibly proud to be back in Edinburgh and to have the honour of delivering the match ball for such a massive fixture.
“It is going to be a very special feeling to be back at Scottish Gas Murrayfield, a stadium where I have so many brilliant memories playing for both club and country over the years.
“With the 1872 Cup up for grabs, it is going to be a fantastic day for the fans and the players alike. I can’t wait for the game to start and I will be doing everything possible to get behind the boys and help Edinburgh secure the win.”
