Edinburgh secured their first Celtic Challenge victory of the season with a hard-fought 31-25 win over Glasgow Warriors in a pulsating derby at Hive Stadium.
The clash served as the opening act of a historic double-header, setting the stage for the men’s 1872 Cup battle later in the day.
History suggested a tight encounter; last season, home advantage proved decisive for both sides. That trend continued as Edinburgh looked to protect their home turf against a Glasgow side buoyed by their first-ever away win the previous week.
Glasgow started with intent, pinning the hosts deep in their own territory from the opening whistle. The Edinburgh defence remained resolute under immense pressure until the midway point of the half, when a 5m penalty allowed Glasgow’s Beth Blacklock to crash over for the opening score.
The Warriors doubled their advantage shortly after, as clinical handling found Hannah Smyth in space out wide to make it 10-0.
Refusing to be silenced, the Edinburgh pack ignited the comeback. A powerful rolling maul saw hooker Aila Ronald ground the ball, with fly-half Hannah Ramsay adding the extras.
While Glasgow responded quickly through a Sky Phimister try, a missed conversion left the door ajar for the hosts.
The game’s turning point arrived just before the interval. Capitalising on a Glasgow yellow card, returning tighthead Molly Poolman, making a physical impact after an injury layoff, battered through a depleted defence to score. Ramsay’s conversion brought Edinburgh within a single point, trailing 14-15 at the break.
Edinburgh emerged for the second half with renewed clinical edge. Captain Hannah Walker led from the front, crossing the line to give her side the lead for the first time. Ramsay, lethal off the tee, widened the gap with another successful kick.
With the momentum firmly behind them, Edinburgh’s backline began to find gaps. Cieron Bell and replacement fullback Nicole Marlow both showcased expert finishing on the edges, crossing for two quick-fire tries that pushed the tally to 31.
Glasgow refused to go quietly. In a frantic final 15 minutes, lock Holland Bogan crossed twice to set up a grandstand finish. Despite the late onslaught, Edinburgh’s defence held firm until the final whistle, sealing a 31-25 victory and a vital first win of the campaign.
