Reflecting on the loss in Johannesburg, Lawrie was clinical in his assessment, stating that while training had been positive, the transition to the pitch was unacceptable.
“Honest reflection: there’s no excuses. It wasn’t good enough over the piece. Fundamentally, the inconsistencies in our game are continuing to raise their heads. In professional sport, you get what you deserve, and there’s no hiding place from that.”
The coach emphasised that the team must avoid the “lost season” narrative by delivering a performance built on grit rather than just tactical analysis.
“It is exceedingly important that this doesn’t become a lost season. Seven days is a long time in rugby; there’s certainly no pity parties happening here. Our fabric needs to be around effort. What’s our fight look like? How much do we care?
“When I watch a team I support, I want to see those things. That was absent at the weekend. We need to get rid of the mindset that we’re a ‘cup team.’ It’s got to be about consistency over a period of time.”
Despite the frustration, the capital side receives a significant boost with the news that Scotland internationals Grant Gilchrist, Darcy Graham, and Pierre Schoeman have joined the squad in South Africa to bolster the ranks.
However, the squad will be without two key forwards for the clash in Cape Town. Lawrie confirmed that Ben Muncaster is currently undergoing return-to-play protocols for a head injury, while D’arcy Rae has been ruled out after picking up a calf injury.
Addressing the long-term identity of the club, Lawrie noted that while the set-piece remains a strength, the ‘absolute fabric’ of the team must be more robust to handle the pressure of the URC.
“We need to make sure that we’re delivering better. If I had the magic bullet I’d give it to you, but it’s really about consistency. We’re frustrated and disappointed with where we are, and we need to find a game model that excites the players and lays down winning performances sharpish.”
