Paralympic Gold Medallist Stephen Clegg to deliver match ball at DHL Stormers

11 Oct 2024

Edinburgh Rugby is thrilled to announce that British Paralympic swimming sensation, Stephen Clegg, will deliver the match ball ahead of tomorrow night’s DHL Stormers clash at Hive Stadium.

Clegg, who recently claimed two gold medals at the 2024 Summer Paris Paralympic Games, is set to inspire the Edinburgh faithful as he takes to the field before the match.

The 28-year-old secured gold in the 100m backstroke and 100m butterfly events, cementing his status as one of the world’s leading Paralympic swimmers.

A proud swimmer for The University of Edinburgh, Clegg has a deep connection to the city and its sporting community. Speaking ahead of his match ball delivery, he expressed his excitement.

“It’s an incredible honour to be given the opportunity to deliver the match ball for Edinburgh Rugby in front of my hometown crowd,” said Clegg.

“Going to school here and training at the University of Edinburgh, I’ve always felt a strong connection to the city. The support I’ve received from the local community has been invaluable, and I’m proud to represent Edinburgh on the world stage.

“I’m looking forward to sharing this special moment with the fans and hopefully helping to create a memorable atmosphere at Hive Stadium.”

Clegg made his Paralympic debut at the Rio 2016 Games, reaching two finals to signal the quality that led to him securing a silver medal on his World Para Swimming Championships bow in 2019.

Clegg clinched the medal in the S12 100m Butterfly event in London – in a British record time – while he also recorded final appearances in the S12 100m Backstroke, S12 50m Freestyle and S12 100m Freestyle events.

Clegg comes from a family of Paralympic athletes, with both older sister Libby and brother James winning medals for ParalympicsGB at London 2012 in athletics and swimming respectively.
