Scott brews up confidence ahead of Saracens friendly
Cammy Scott steps into the spotlight tonight, donning the number 10 jersey for Edinburgh Rugby’s development friendly against Saracens at Hive Stadium.
It’s a chance for the young stand-off to showcase his talent and build on a season of positive feedback and growing confidence.
While game time has been limited, Scott remains upbeat. “Throughout the season, obviously I’ve not had the minutes that I’d like, but I’d say the feedback that I’ve had across the board has been pretty positive. So for me as a player, it fills you with confidence,” he says.
His time with Heriot’s and in A games has provided valuable experience, allowing him to “lead the team too and also put how I play on the game a wee bit.”
His relationship with Head Coach Sean Everitt is a key factor in his development. “Yeah, I feel like every time I talk to him, it’s always really positive,” Scott explains. “As a coach, you he’s really positive and honest which is what you want.”
This open communication is vital, especially when it comes to competition for places and searching for more game time. “Whenever I’ve not played, he’s always talked to me, I’ll obviously go talk to him, which makes it that easier having that kind of relationship.”
The team’s improved attack this season, particularly highlighted in the recent Munster victory, has further fuelled Scott’s optimism.
“I think most recently, obviously the Munster game, the boys were really connected, all aligned. And then everything that we said during the week, we kind of actioned it,” he says. “It just felt like all those points that we’d actioned just like kind of came off.”
Inspiration also comes from his age-grade teammates who have made their mark on the professional stage. “Yeah, even like playing like U16s, U17s, U18s, like boys like Jamie Dobie, Gregor Brown, even Benny Muncaster and Currie, It’s awesome to see them playing,” Scott enthuses. “Just now I’m getting goosebumps talking about it because it’s like, it’s not obviously what you aspire to be, but to have your mates doing that, it’s really cool to see.”
The competition for the number 10 jersey at Edinburgh is fierce, but Scott sees it as a positive. “I’d say it’s actually really good. It’s a competitive group, actually,” he acknowledges. “We all add something that we can all take from each other, which I think is really good as a group of tens, and it really pushes the squad on.”
Looking ahead to tonight’s clash with Saracens, Scott is eager to test himself. “Oh, I’m excited for it. I mean, getting to start is nice. It’s a good feeling. So I think the fact I get that, it’ll be good fun. And obviously at ten, again,” he says.
He’s also aware of the challenge Saracens present. “They’re going to be coming with line speed. So for us, it’s about playing in the right areas as opposed to overplaying.”
Beyond the rugby pitch, Scott has embarked on an exciting entrepreneurial venture: Ramblin Roast. What started as a camping trip with his best friend Ethan and a pizza oven has blossomed into a thriving coffee trailer business.
“We were just blasting out pizzas and we offered him one and then he enjoyed it. So we were like, at the time, he’d just got a coffee machine and we had an interest in it,” Scott recalls.
“We were like, what could we do? And then at the time, we knew a few boys that had trailers before and we just kind of picked their minds and asked them how they did it. And then for us, we were just like, screw it, let’s do it!”
Ramblin Roast now operates at a local football club in Bonnyrigg and at Watsonians’ home games. “It’s just a coffee trailer and obviously doing it alongside the rugby,” Scott explains.
“And Ethan also has a job, so it’s quite hard to find the time to do it. So right now, we just pretty much do either a Friday, Saturday, Sunday, whenever the clients or event wants something, we’d cater to that.”
The business is expanding, with potential for further growth. “So he’s got another couple of trailers now, so he’s offered us if we want to take them on.
He also envisions collaborations with fellow Edinburgh Rugby players. “Like we’ll probably try going to get some clothing, also help out other boys. We’ve chatted to Darcy [Graham], I’ve chatted to [Marshall] Sykesy. Like Sykesy’s sweets, we can sell them. Darcy’s clothing, we can then have a collaboration with him, you know what I mean? It’s quite versatile!”
With a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and a burgeoning coffee empire, Cammy Scott is ready to make his mark both on and off the field in the Scottish capital.
