Stormers rally late to sink Edinburgh in Cape Town

Edinburgh Rugby’s South African tour reached a frustrating conclusion last night as they fell to a 33–14 defeat against the DHL Stormers at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town.

Despite welcoming back a host of Scotland internationals and maintaining a competitive edge for over an hour, Sean Everitt’s side were ultimately overwhelmed by a clinical Stormers outfit that secured a late bonus-point victory.

The match began with immediate drama when Stormers prop Ntuthuko Mchunu was shown a yellow card in the 6th minute for a deliberate knock-on, yet Edinburgh struggled to capitalise on the early man advantage.

The deadlock was eventually broken in the 24th minute when Evan Roos powered over for the hosts following a period of sustained physical pressure.

Edinburgh’s response, however, was spectacular; in the 34th minute, James Lang intercepted a pass on his own goal line and sprinted the length of the pitch to score a sensational solo try, with Ross Thompson’s conversion sending the teams into the break level at 7–7.

The second half turned into a physical seesaw as both sides traded blows in the Cape Town heat.

The Stormers struck first in the 49th minute through Leolin Zas, who finished a sharp lineout counter, but Edinburgh’s resilience shone through once more.

In the 58th minute, Boan Venter muscled his way over from close range, and Thompson’s successful conversion briefly put the visitors ahead 14–12.

However, the final twenty minutes belonged entirely to the home side as the altitude and the Stormers’ bench depth began to tell.

Mchunu made amends for his earlier card by scoring in the 63rd minute to retake the lead, followed quickly by a second try for Evan Roos to secure his brace.

With Edinburgh’s defence tiring, veteran Deon Fourie pounced on a loose ball in the final minute to secure the bonus-point try and seal the 33–14 result.
