Williams to skipper vs Watsonians

Tighthead prop Angus Williams will captain Edinburgh ‘A’ against his former side Watsonians at Meggetland tomorrow evening in the FOSROC Super Series Sprint (24 May, kick-off 7.35pm).

The prop, who initially moved across from New Zealand to play for the Myreside outfit, has since made 26 senior Edinburgh appearances, and is handed the armband to face his former charges.

Edinburgh ‘A’ go into the match looking to maintain a 100% record in the FOSROC Super Series Sprint, having beaten Heriot’s Rugby and the Southern Knights in their last two outings.

Edinburgh Rugby Pro-Academy Coach Kris Burney has named an unchanged back three for the fixture, with Jack Brown once again starting at full-back alongside wingers Finn Douglas and Nairn Moncrieff (Gala RFC).

The capital midfield pairing again remains consistent, with Jack Hocking at inside centre, partnered by Watsonians’ outside centre Sam Leweni.

Charlie Shiel returns to vice-captain the side at scrum-half, as academy half-back Finn Burgess is deployed at stand-off.

Williams forms part of an experienced front row, with Luan de Bruin at loosehead prop and Paddy Harrison at hooker.

The ‘A’ side’s engine room has seen Euan McVie and Rob Carmichael partnered at lock for both matches, and the pair reunite once again for tomorrow’s clash at Meggetland.

Academy youngster Tom Currie moves into the number 8 jersey, with Freddy Douglas – who scored last time out against Heriot’s – coming in to start at openside flanker, alongside Adam McBurney who is named on the blindside

Ahead of tomorrow night’s match Burney said: “It has obviously been a successful Sprint campaign for us so far and we’re keen for that to continue.

“Last time out was a great challenge against a strong Heriot’s side. I imagine it would have been a thrilling watch for any neutrals, but it was certainly a nervy conclusion for us.

“However, our ability to hold on and secure that win shows the really promising resilience we have within this young group.

Naturally, we would love to sign off our Sprint season in style but we’re under no illusions that Watsonians pose a real threat.

“It appears they have slightly adjusted their style of play and that can take some getting used to. However, they have a core of strong players and look to be growing into the campaign as each game passes, so I expect a challenging match.”
