Record-breaking 1872 Cup hits 20,000

This month’s unmissable 1872 Cup clash against Glasgow Warriors at Scottish Gas Murrayfield has raced past the 20,000-crowd mark in record time – with over a fortnight still to go until the derby decider on Saturday 30 December (kick-off 3pm).

Fans from both ends of the M8 have been snapping up tickets throughout December as anticipation intensifies for the inter-city derby that sees Scotland’s biggest stars go head-to-head for the coveted 1872 Cup and crucial BKT United Rugby Championship points.

With 20,000 tickets sold and 18 days still to go until the derby decider, this year’s 1872 Cup clash is well on the way to surpassing the attendance record of 27,437 achieved in 2019.

Breaking a landmark 30,000-crowd is now a realistic target, with several new sections opened today, behind both ends, to cope with the unprecedented demand.

With the match returning to its traditional festive spot, and with an earlier kick-off of 3pm, it’s the perfect chance to get the whole family together to kickstart your Hogmanay celebrations, with supporters encouraged to act fast to secure the best view and best value seats in the ground.

The men’s clash is part of a historic double-header at Scottish Gas Murrayfield that sees the inaugural women’s inter-city derby take place in Hive Stadium earlier in the day, as Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow Warriors women’s team face off in Hive Stadium at 12 noon.
