150th anniversary 1872 Cup kit unveiled

23 Nov 2022

Edinburgh Rugby today unveiled a special edition match jersey to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the representative district and, ultimately, club side, designed and manufactured by Official Kit Supplier Macron.

The kit is launched on the exact anniversary of the first-ever meeting between Edinburgh and Glasgow District representative sides, with that fixture – the first edition of world rugby’s oldest intercity derby – taking place at Burbank, Glasgow, on 23 November 1872.

Edinburgh’s players will wear the commemorative jersey in both home and away festive derbies against Glasgow Warriors, with the deciding leg taking place before a bumper crowd at BT Murrayfield on Friday 30 December (kick-off 7.35pm).

Edinburgh Rugby Managing Director Douglas Struth welcomed the launch of the special edition kit.

He said: “Today’s kit launch is a brilliant way to commemorate 150 years of rugby in the Scottish capital and the classic design is a fantastic nod to the history of both the club and the intercity derbies.

“As we unveil the jersey, it only adds to the excitement and build up to next month’s 1872 Cup fixtures, with the deciding leg at BT Murrayfield set to be a special and historic occasion for all connected to Edinburgh Rugby.”

The classically-inspired jersey has a hoop design, featuring burnt orange and white borders, separating the melange navy blue textured base.

‘150 years’ is embroidered underneath the Edinburgh Rugby club badge, while the returning classic collar pays tribute to Edinburgh District’s traditional match jerseys.

Main Club Sponsor Scottish Building Society sits proudly on the front of the shirt, which supporters will be able to see in action for the first time in both 1872 Cup derbies, the first of which takes place at Scotstoun on Friday 23 December (kick-off 7.35pm).

The 150th anniversary kit is available now to buy in-store at BT Murrayfield and online at shop.scottishrugby.org – the perfect Christmas gift for all Edinburgh Rugby fans this festive season.
