Callum Beattie to perform at 1872 Cup decider

30 Nov 2022

Edinburgh-born singer-songwriter Callum Beattie will return to his roots later this month with the solo star set to perform pre-match at the 150th anniversary 1872 Cup clash at BT Murrayfield on Friday 30 December (kick-off 7.35pm).

Beattie – who grew up in Musselburgh – shot to fame with the release of his debut album, People Like Us, in 2020 and will now take to the stage at Scotland’s national stadium as Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow Warriors go head-to-head for intercity bragging rights.

The ‘Salamander Street’ singer will be on hand pre-match to get the crowd in the mood for derby action as he performs a string of hit releases.

Beattie – who’ll be cheering on his hometown club at BT Murrayfield – has expressed his excitement at returning home for the derby encounter 150 years in the making.

He said: “I’m really excited to get back to BT Murrayfield. Playing in front of the Edinburgh supporters will be really special and I’m honoured to be involved in such a historic match.

“I’d encourage fans from both cities to get along and take part in a brilliant day – the atmosphere will be electric and I can’t wait to play my part in making sure the stadium is bouncing pre-match.”

A bumper crowd is expected for the derby encounter which sees crowds of over 25,000 regularly attend the festive fixture.

With both sides of the rivalry celebrating their 150th anniversary – and the 150thanniversary of the first-ever meeting between the two district teams in November 1872 – this year’s derby will have extra sentiment, with Beattie’s pre-match performance the headline in a host of matchday activities honouring the occasion.

Beattie continued: “Edinburgh-Glasgow is a massive rivalry. 150 years of rugby history is pretty special and it’s clear how much the game means to both sets of fans.

“Taking the stage at BT Murrayfield is a huge honour. I was lucky enough to perform at last year’s Tonga match and this month’s 1872 Cup decider will be even bigger – I can’t wait to see you everyone there.”
