Edinburgh Rugby to unveil 150th anniversary history project
Edinburgh Rugby will tomorrow (Thursday 22 September) unveil a history project two years in the making to commemorate the club’s 150th anniversary season, 1872-2022.
In a venture started in 2020, the club’s communications team have endeavoured to categorise every single Edinburgh player and match since the inaugural inter-city derby against Glasgow District at Burbank on 23 November 1872, with a full list of over 1300 players now identified through both the amateur and professional eras.
Alongside this, the club will also reveal its full Captain’s List, from the capital side’s first-ever skipper, Francis Moncreiff [1872], to Edinburgh Rugby’s newest co-captains, Grant Gilchrist and Jamie Ritchie [2022].
Today’s announcement comes with 100 days to go until December’s 1872 Cup finale at BT Murrayfield (Friday 30 December, kick-off 7.35pm), as the build-up to the 150th anniversary of world rugby’s oldest inter-city derby continues.
Following the announcement, the club will allow for a period of public interrogation of the full player list before allocating and announcing a specific number to every player that has pulled on the Edinburgh shirt.
Stay tuned to the club’s social channels for tomorrow’s announcement…
