Lawrie calls for brutal honesty as Edinburgh prepare for Aviva Test

Edinburgh Rugby head to the iconic Aviva Stadium this Saturday, relishing the chance to test themselves against a high-flying Leinster side

Forwards Coach Stevie Lawrie is under no illusions about the scale of the challenge, acknowledging that the Irish giants have reached a new level of defensive aggression.

“Leinster are an outstanding team,” Lawrie noted. “Under Jacques Nienaber, they’ve focused on their defence and they bring that heavy line speed, so we need to make sure we combat that with how we have attacked, certainly in that first half on Friday, or against Toulon.”

For Edinburgh, the mission is clear: they must find the clinical edge displayed in their best European performances to disrupt the Leinster rhythm on their own patch.

The preparation for Dublin has been shaped by a period of deep “introspection” following a Friday night’s two-point loss to the Vodacom Bulls.

Lawrie was candid about where the pack fell short in that physical encounter, admitting the team’s power game wasn’t at the required level.

“I thought our power game was lacking. I thought we got duffed up by them, so that’s an area I’m certainly looking at to make sure we’re better again,” Lawrie said.

He described the post-match debrief as an exercise in “brutal honesty,” highlighting a frustrating trend where a strong opening 40 minutes hasn’t translated into a full-game performance.

“The frustration is that we look like we don’t want to lose games as opposed to wanting to win games. It’s about making sure there’s no hiding places and making sure we all step up.”

To bridge that gap against Leinster, Lawrie believes the squad must rediscover the proactive mindset that allowed them to dominate early against the Bulls.

The goal is to move past the habit of merely trying to stay in the contest and instead find the confidence to “put teams away” when the opportunities arise.

The capital side’s cause will be bolstered by the return of several Scotland internationals. While the specific names remain under wraps for now, Lawrie confirmed that Head Coach Sean Everitt has been informed of who is being released back to the club.

“There’s going to be a few… it’s absolutely helpful for a tough away trip,” Lawrie explained.

“I think also mixing those experienced guys in with the young guys who have performed really well for us this year is important. We welcome them back.”

With the league moving toward a break, Lawrie views this weekend as a pivotal moment to prove the squad’s growth.

“It’s a vitally important game for us given where we are in the log and showing that we have made developments in this block. It’s vital that we get it right.”
