Five-star Edinburgh down The Sharks

25 Apr 2026

A five-try display at a sold-out Hive Stadium sealed a hard-fought and dramatic victory for Edinburgh as they came from behind twice to overcome Hollywoodbets Sharks in a match that had everything.

The evening began under clear skies and ended in cold fog, but the conditions were the last thing on anyone’s mind as Edinburgh produced one of their most complete performances of the season.

It was the visitors who struck first. A well-executed lineout set the platform for Edwill van der Merwe to receive the pass on the wing and motor over the line. Jean-Luc du Plessis added the conversion.

Edinburgh’s response was swift and characteristically physical. Flanker Freddy Douglas – never far from a turnover – won crucial ball back in Edinburgh’s own 22, and from the resulting pressure, the eventual BKT URC Player of the Match, Ewan Ashman, powered over from close range for his side’s first score.

It was the hooker’s second consecutive BKT Player of the Match award, and few who witnessed his all action-performance would argue with the honour. Cammy Scott converted to level things at 7–7 after 16 minutes.

Sharks hit back through a rolling maul, number eight Manu Tshituka touching down at the back as the Durban side’s set-piece muscle told. The conversion was added to make it 14–7.

But Edinburgh were not behind for long. A moment of genuine quality from Hector Patterson – who successfully executed a 50:22 to pin the visitors deep – gave the hosts the foothold they needed.

Just a few phases later, Grant Gilchrist made a barnstorming break through the Sharks’ defensive line, and Glen Young was perfectly positioned on his shoulder to take the pass and stroll over for a well-worked score. Scott’s boot levelled the contest heading into the break.

Sharks continued where they left off after the interval, Vincent Koch dotting down from a driving maul to put the South Africans ahead for the third time.

But Edinburgh’s character, so evident throughout, came to the fore once more.

Replacement winger Jack Brown injected pace and purpose off the bench, his incisive break opening the door for Tom Currie to find Mosese Tuipulotu in space on the left touchline.

The centre showed both power and composure to hold off the covering defenders and get over the line — a try that shifted the momentum firmly in Edinburgh’s favour.

Then came Hector Patterson’s moment. Ashman’s charge-down was instinctive and decisive, and the hooker had the awareness to immediately offload to Patterson, who showed electric pace to run in from 40 metres and cap a sensational shift with a well-deserved try. Ross Thompson, on for Cammy Scott, added the extras.

Edinburgh’s fifth and finest try of the night was the pick of the lot.

Darcy Graham, already a constant threat out wide, produced a moment of individual brilliance – chipping ahead once, then again immediately, before engineering the ball back into O’Connor’s hands, who fed Graham back into full stride.

The Scotland winger dived over in the corner to complete a wonder score. Thompson again added the conversion.

Sharks scored a consolation try in the closing minutes to close the gap, but by then Edinburgh’s place in the result was never in doubt.
