Everitt extended on new two-year deal

14 Jan 2026

Edinburgh Rugby Head Coach Sean Everitt has signed a new two-year contract extension, a deal that will see him remain at the helm of the capital club until the conclusion of the 2027/28 season.

Now in his third year at Hive Stadium, Everitt has overseen the club’s return to the Investec Champions Cup and a place in last season’s BKT United Rugby Championship play-offs for the first time since 2021/22. Following back-to-back wins to open 2026, Edinburgh currently sit second in their Investec Champions Cup pool ahead of Friday’s clash with Bath.

Everitt guided the club to the Semi-Finals of the EPCR Challenge Cup in 2024/25 – it’s first European Semi-Final in ten years – where they were narrowly beaten by eventual winners Bath.

With the team currently unbeaten at Hive Stadium this season in all competitions, the South African’s extension provides coaching stability as Edinburgh Rugby continues to develop its squad and build on the progress made over the last two years.

Edinburgh Rugby Head Coach Sean Everitt said: “I am incredibly proud to extend terms with Edinburgh Rugby.

“I have loved the challenge of bringing through the next crop of young Scottish talent and seeing them grow in this environment.

“I firmly believe that with patience and work, this team can truly inspire the city. Our motto of ‘local players becoming legends’ is something we live by, and I am excited to see what we can achieve with this next generation of Edinburgh players.”

Allied to incremental improvements on the pitch, is Everitt’s wealth of experience and proven track record in talent identification and player development, vital with promising young Scots coming through the ranks and making cases for selection at club and country level.

Having spent 15 years within the Hollywoodbets Sharks organisation from 2007 to 2022, Everitt arrived in Scotland with a reputation for nurturing elite youth talent.

This expertise has been central to his work in the capital, where he has already handed senior debuts to 27 Scottish players, 13 of whom developed through the club’s academy system.

Under his guidance, talented prospects have flourished, with Ollie Blyth-Lafferty, Liam McConnell, Freddy Douglas, Tom Currie, Conor McAlpine, Jack Brown and, most recently, Euan McVie all making their professional bows under his watch.

The individual success of McConnell and Douglas – both named Investec Champions Cup Players of the Match in wins against RC Toulon and Gloucester – underscores the player development taking place at the club and reflects Everitt’s commitment to giving young Scottish players a platform to progress.

Scottish Rugby Performance Director David Nucifora said: “We are delighted to confirm Sean Everitt’s extension as Head Coach of Edinburgh Rugby.

“In our recent discussions, it was clear that we share a vision for building on the strong foundations Sean has laid to date. Scottish Rugby will continue to build strong alignment with Sean and Edinburgh Rugby so that the team can reach its full potential.

“We are particularly focused on accelerating the development of Edinburgh’s exciting crop of young Scottish players who in recent times have shown their ability to compete at this level of the game.”

Edinburgh Rugby Managing Director Douglas Struth said: “Continuity is a hallmark of the most successful clubs in rugby; they have benefitted from having coaches at the helm for extended periods. That continuity will be crucial moving forward.

“Sean has committed to bringing through a generation of young players who will pull on the Edinburgh jersey with pride for years to come, and this is vital.

“We have a clear blueprint and plan for the future on the field, and this new deal allows Sean to continue building on our vision of local players becoming legends.”

Edinburgh began 2026 with a landmark result against Benetton Rugby, marking the team’s first win at Stadio Monigo since 2017; a ground notoriously tough for visiting teams.

They followed that result with a resilient performance on Friday night in the Investec Champions Cup, recording a 13-point come-from-behind victory over Gloucester at Hive Stadium.

The bonus-point win leaves Edinburgh on 10 points in Pool 2, just one point behind pool leaders Bath, whom they face this Friday night at The Rec.
