1872 Cup eyes record breaking finale

This month’s unmissable 1872 Cup decider has raced past the 30,000-crowd mark in record time – one week before Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow Warriors meet at Scottish Gas Murrayfield on Saturday 28 December (kick-off 3pm).

Fans have been snapping up tickets as anticipation intensifies for the inter-city derby that sees Scotland’s biggest stars go head-to-head – with the opening leg taking place at Glasgow’s Hampden Park for the first time this weekend, before returning for the finale at the home of Scottish rugby a week later.

Breaking last season’s record crowd (37,904) is now in the club’s sights, with new sections opened to complete the national stadium’s lower bowl, on top of the upper sections of the east and west stand – the latter opened (and expanded) for the first time this season.

Supporters are encouraged to act now to secure the best view and best value seats in the stadium amidst the unprecedented demand. All tickets purchased online are delivered straight to the Scottish Rugby ticketing app and can be purchased on the day.

Edinburgh Rugby Managing Director Douglas Struth said: “We’re on the cusp of what could be the biggest and best 1872 Cup derby ever.

“It’s very much part of the city’s world-famous Hogmanay celebrations, with a family friendly atmosphere, and we’d encourage everyone to get involved.”

He added: “To be challenging last season’s record so soon is a testament to the huge amount of work that has gone into promote the fixture, the quality of the occasion and action, as well as the excellent support of our fans.

“We’re proud to represent Scotland’s capital city and it will be a moment to savour, for all connected to the club, as we aim to surpass a record-crowd backing Edinburgh Rugby next Saturday.”
