Edinburgh Rugby duo roar into 2025 British & Irish Lions squad

8 May 2025

Edinburgh Rugby is today celebrating the selection of two of its star players, Duhan van der Merwe and Pierre Schoeman, in the British & Irish Lions squad for their highly anticipated tour to Australia this summer.

Electric winger Duhan van der Merwe has earned his second Lions call-up, having previously toured South Africa in 2021. For powerhouse prop Pierre Schoeman, this marks a momentous occasion as he receives his first selection to the prestigious touring squad.

Van der Merwe and Schoeman join a distinguished list of Edinburgh legends who have donned the famous red jersey, including Andy Irvine, Iain Milne, Simon Taylor, and Ross Ford, further cementing the club’s proud history of contributing to the Lions.

The 2025 Lions tour will see the squad play a total of ten matches, commencing with a home fixture against Argentina in Dublin on June 20th for the 1888 Cup.

The team will then embark on their journey to Australia, facing Super Rugby sides the Western Force, Queensland Reds, NSW Waratahs, and ACT Brumbies, followed by a clash against an Invitational Australia/New Zealand XV.

The three-Test series against the Wallabies kicks off on July 19th at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, followed by a match against a First Nations & Pasifika XV. The second Test will take place at the iconic MCG in Melbourne, with the series decider held at Accor Stadium in Sydney.

Edinburgh Rugby Head Coach Sean Everitt expressed his immense pride in the selections, saying: “We are absolutely thrilled for Duhan and Pierre on their selection for the British & Irish Lions tour to Australia.

“It is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and the consistent high level of performance they have delivered for Edinburgh Rugby. Duhan has proven himself on the international stage with the Lions before, and for Pierre to earn his first call-up is fantastic and richly deserved.

“As a club, we are incredibly proud to have them representing Edinburgh on such a prestigious international platform this summer.”
