The new terms take effect immediately and improve on the 21-year-old’s first professional contract, penned earlier this year.
Patterson has made a promising start to the new campaign. He has started all four of Edinburgh’s matches so far and scored in the opening-round win against Ulster in Belfast.
That form builds on the end of last season. Patterson started Edinburgh’s last four fixtures, three of which ended in victory, and he scored in the wins over Zebre Parma and Hollywoodbets Sharks.
He has formed a steady half-back partnership with summer signing James Grayson, with Edinburgh sitting top of the BKT United Rugby Championship ahead of this Friday night’s fixture against the 10Bets Lions at Hive Stadium.
On his new deal, Patterson said: “I’m really proud to have signed a new deal with Edinburgh. This is my club and I honestly didn’t want to be anywhere else.
“I love the direction we’re heading in this season, and the attacking style that’s been brought in suits the way I want to play. We’ve got a great group of young players coming through, alongside some really experienced guys who do a brilliant job of leading the squad.
“It’s an exciting time to be at Edinburgh. There’s a lot ahead of us and I can’t wait to be part of it.”
Patterson came through the ranks at Jed-Forest and Hawick RFC before progressing through the Edinburgh Rugby academy. He was part of the Scotland side that won the 2024 World Rugby U20 Trophy.
Patterson is following in his father’s footsteps. Derrick Patterson played scrum-half for Scotland, winning two senior caps during the 1990s, and was part of the squad at the 1995 Rugby World Cup.
The family link to Edinburgh goes back more than three decades. Derrick became Edinburgh District’s player number 914 when he made his debut against Glasgow at Goldenacre in November 1992.
Hector later earned his own place in the club’s history as player number 1351 on his first appearance, against Zebre Parma. Father and son are now both part of the same Edinburgh story, in the same position, a generation apart.
Edinburgh Rugby Head Coach, Sean Everitt, said: “We’re delighted to get this deal over the line. Hector has a huge amount of potential. He’s gutsy and he cares about winning.
“We think he can be a big player for this club for years to come. There are plenty of young players putting their hands up in this team, and we’re excited to see what Hector can achieve as part of it.”
