Lang signs two-year extension

13 Dec 2023

Scotland international centre James Lang has penned a new two-year deal with Edinburgh Rugby.

Lang, 28 – now in his third season in the Scottish capital – has been an impressive and consistent performer since joining from Harlequins ahead of the 2021/22 season, scoring two tries in 42 appearances.

Lang – capped six times by Scotland – has started the current campaign in fine form, featuring in five BKT United Rugby Championship fixtures so far while grabbing a well-taken score in last month’s away clash with Leinster.

On extending terms with the club, Lang said: “I’m really excited to be part of this group for another couple of seasons. I’ve loved my time here. Edinburgh as a city is amazing.

He continued: “We’ve not achieved what we wanted the last few seasons, but with this group of players and coaches I’m excited to see where we can go and hopefully win some silverware. That was a big reason for wanting to stay here.

“I love the environment we have here as a group and I want to continue to make some great memories with my mates on and off the field.”

A product of the London Irish Academy, Lang played for Middlesex County at U16 and U18 levels and was sports captain (2011) for his school, Ashford CofE, before earning his first Scotland call for the U18 side in 2013.

Lang joined Welsh side Rygbi Gogledd Cymru (RGC1404) as a teenager where developed his game at a senior level before returning to England to join his boyhood club Harlequins.

Lang made 94 appearances for Harlequins during five seasons at Twickenham Stoop – notching up 214 points – and won the Premiership title in his final year at the club before joining Edinburgh Rugby.

He made his Scotland debut against Canada in Edmonton in June 2018 alongside Edinburgh teammate and current Scotland captain, Jamie Ritchie.

Edinburgh Rugby Senior Coach Sean Everitt added: “James [Lang] has been one of our most consistent performers this season. He’s a quality operator in the 12 channel and provides a real mix of skill and go-forward. We’re delighted to see him re-sign.

“James has all the talent to be a top player in this championship and someone who can challenge for more caps at international level. He’s a resilient character who has shown that he can be versatile in our back-line, covering a variety of positions.

“It’s brilliant to see players like James re-sign with Edinburgh. I’m sure he had no shortage of offers, so to see him extend terms for another two years showcases his commitment to the club.”
