Carmichael joins Newcastle Red Bulls on short-term loan

The 23-year-old linked up with Dan McFarland’s squad at Kingston Park earlier this week and will spend the next three weeks with the Red Bulls before returning to the capital.

The move is focused on giving Carmichael valuable game time and minutes at a senior level, building on the Edinburgh ‘A’ rugby he has played over recent months after a period in which he has had limited time on the pitch over the last two years.

Edinburgh Rugby Head Coach Sean Everitt said: “This is a great opportunity for Rob. He’s worked hard to get himself back playing with the ‘A’ team over the last few months, and the next step for him is consistent minutes in a competitive environment.

“Three weeks with Newcastle playing PREM Cup rugby gives him exactly that, and we look forward to welcoming him back with those games under his belt.”

Carmichael joined Edinburgh Rugby on an initial loan from Leicester Tigers in February 2024 before signing a three-year deal. Later that year was selected as a development player for Scotland’s summer tour of the Americas, while also representing Emerging Scotland against Italy U23 at Hive Stadium.

Carmichael made his Edinburgh debut off the bench against Gloucester in the EPCR Challenge Cup in December 2024, before going on to make his URC debut against Scarlets and featuring in the Challenge Cup quarter-final win over the Vodacom Bulls.
