Shiel extends terms for ninth season in the capital

Edinburgh Rugby is delighted to announce scrum-half Charlie Shiel has signed a new one-year deal with the club, extending his tenure into a ninth season with his hometown team.

The 27-year-old remains an integral part of the Edinburgh Rugby squad, not only for his dynamic play on the field but also for his growing leadership role within the group.

As one of the senior players in the capital club, Shiel has embraced the responsibility of guiding and mentoring the younger generation of talent coming through the ranks at Hive Stadium.

Having featured in seven matches this season, including starts away to Gloucester and at home to Black Lion in the EPCR Challenge Cup, Shiel’s experience is highly valued within the Edinburgh camp.

He is now set to contribute from the bench in tomorrow night’s crucial BKT United Rugby Championship clash against Hollywoodbets Sharks at Hive Stadium (Friday 18 April, kick-off 7.35pm).

Speaking on his extension, Shiel said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be extending my time with Edinburgh Rugby for another season. This club means so much to me, being my hometown team, and to be heading into my ninth season here is something I’m incredibly proud of.

“As I’ve become one of the more experienced guys in the squad, I’ve really enjoyed taking on more of a leadership role and helping to drive standards. It’s been great working alongside the younger nines like Hector Paterson and Conor McAlpine, and I get a real buzz out of sharing my experiences and helping them develop.

“I still feel I have so much to give when I get my opportunity on the pitch, and I’m determined to play my part as we enter a crucial business end of the season, starting with Sharks this Friday night.”

Shiel has made a total of 69 appearances for Edinburgh Rugby since joining the club’s academy ahead of the 2017/18 season. He made his debut against Southern Kings in January 2019, becoming Edinburgh player #1262.

An Edinburgh man through and through, Shiel was educated at the city’s Royal High School and played his club rugby at Currie. He also comes from rich Edinburgh Rugby heritage, with his father Graham Shiel (#985, 1990-2000) and grandfather Dougie Morgan (#756, 1971) both former club captains.

Edinburgh Rugby Head Coach, Sean Everitt, added: “Charlie has developed his game and has the opportunity to step up into a leadership role with the departure of Ali Price. He is a dependable player who brings a consistent and professional attitude to his craft every single day.

“His experience is invaluable, and he has really embraced his role in helping nurture the younger players coming through, particularly in the scrum-half position. It’s brilliant to have secured Charlie for another year and we know he will continue to be a valuable asset to the squad both on and off the field.”
