Ever-present Goosen pens new two-year deal

2 Apr 2025

Edinburgh Rugby is delighted to announce that back-three star Wes Goosen has signed a new two-year deal with the club, extending his stay in the capital until 2027.

The 29-year-old – who is set make his 50th appearance this Friday night – has been a revelation this season, showcasing remarkable consistency and durability by playing every minute of every game.

Starting in 18 out of 18 matches (17 at full-back) Goosen has been a key figure in the Edinburgh Rugby backline, demonstrating his attacking prowess and reliability under the high ball.

Goosen said: “I’m absolutely buzzing to be staying at Edinburgh Rugby. This club has become my home, and the support I’ve felt from the fans since I arrived has been incredible.

“This season has been special for me personally, getting consistent game time and feeling the trust from Sean has allowed me to really enjoy my rugby. The environment here is amazing, and it was a no-brainer to re-sign.

“I truly believe we can achieve something special together, and I’m excited to be a part of that journey.”

This new contract comes as a testament to Goosen’s outstanding form, following a strong bounce-back campaign in 2023/24 where he was named the club’s Players’ Player of the Season.

Goosen’s consistency has been punctuated by crucial tries, with the full-back scoring three this season, all in the EPCR Challenge Cup, against Gloucester, Vannes, and Black Lion.

His remarkable durability is highlighted by his impressive professional playing time, placing him in the 99.2nd percentile for minutes played over the last 10 seasons, ranking 127th out of over 15,700 players worldwide.

Goosen’s two-year commitment to Edinburgh Rugby, initially extended by a one-year deal last season, will see the full-back become Scottish qualified on residency rules in 2027.

Edinburgh Rugby Head Coach Sean Everitt said: “Securing Wes for another two years is fantastic news for the club. He’s had a brilliant season, demonstrating exceptional consistency and quality in every match.

“Wes embodies exactly what we look for in a non-Scottish qualified player: a quality player who can cover multiple positions and brings a significant positive impact to the club’s culture. He ticks all three boxes.

“Wes has already established himself as one of the best players in the URC and if he continues to develop to be in the mix with Scotland in 2027, I’ve got no doubt he has the potential to be an international level player.”

Goosen’s re-signing follows on from new deals recently announced for Ben Vellacott, Pierre Schoeman, Duhan van der Merwe, Ben Muncaster, D’arcy Rae, and Matt Currie.
