Edinburgh Rugby is delighted to announce that back-row Liam McConnell has been voted Scottish Building Society Player of the Month for December.
The 21-year-old academy graduate enjoyed a true breakout month in the capital, firmly establishing himself as one of the club’s most consistent performers.
McConnell’s rise was punctuated by a standout European debut against RC Toulon, where his tireless work rate earned him the Investec Player of the Match award.
McConnell continued his fine form into the festive period, impressing in his first-ever 1872 Cup appearances against Glasgow Warriors.
His defensive grit was a highlight of the derby series, most notably producing a massive try-line turnover penalty in the heat of the inter-city rivalry.
To cap off a stellar month, the back-rower recently committed his future to his hometown club by signing a new long-term professional contract.
The announcement comes as McConnell is named in the starting line-up for tomorrow night’s vital Investec Champions Cup clash against Gloucester at Hive Stadium.
On winning the award, McConnell said: “I’m incredibly proud to pick up this award, especially knowing it’s voted for by the fans.
“Their support at Hive Stadium and on the road means everything to us. While I’ve been happy with my own form lately, I know there is still so much more to come from me personally and from us as a group.
“Last weekend’s gritty win in Treviso was a massive result for the squad and we want to use that as a springboard for this European block.
“We aren’t underestimating Gloucester for a second tomorrow night; they are a top-quality side, but we are back at home and ready for the challenge.”
As part of the award, Scottish Building Society has donated £500 to McConnell’s grassroots club, Boroughmuir RFC. This initiative continues to shine a light on the journey players take from youth rugby to the professional ranks.
McConnell added: “I can’t thank Scottish Building Society enough for the £500 donation to Boroughmuir. It’s special to see our sponsors supporting the grassroots game because that’s where it all begins.
“Boroughmuir means a lot to me. They supported me through every age grade and gave me the platform to become the player I am today.
“This money will go a long way in supporting their youth initiatives and helping the next generation of players coming through at Meggetland.”
Edinburgh Rugby Head Coach, Sean Everitt, said: “Liam’s form throughout December was exceptional. He has developed into a very important player for this club in a short space of time.
“He is a true ‘team-first’ guy who leads through his actions on the pitch, and this award is fully deserved for the shift he’s put in.
“He’s been a standout in some very high-pressure matches, and we look forward to seeing him continue to be an influential player for us as we push for success in both the Investec Champions Cup and the BKK United Rugby Championship.”
