The 23-year-old has been a standout performer for the capital club so far this season, scoring five tries in six appearances, including braces in home bonus-point wins over DHL Stormers and Benetton.

His early season performances earned him a call-up to Scotland’s Autumn Nations Series squad, where he made his senior international debut – starting at openside – in the 59-21 win over Portugal at Scottish Gas Murrayfield.

Muncaster’s re-signing provides a significant boost to the club ahead of the highly anticipated 1872 Cup derbies against Glasgow Warriors.

The opening leg takes place at Hampden Park this Sunday, followed by the return leg at Scottish Gas Murrayfield on Saturday 28 December (kick-off 3pm), which is already the fastest-selling 1872 Cup match in club history.

Muncaster celebrates after scoring a solo effort against DHL Stormers

On extending terms, Muncaster said: “I’m incredibly proud to re-sign with Edinburgh. It was a no-brainer.

“This is my hometown club, and I’m loving playing my rugby here under Sean Everitt. The team is playing some exciting rugby, and I’m really enjoying my own game as well.

“I’m excited for the future. There is plenty of room for growth and we’re moving in the right direction as a squad.”

An East Lothian native, Muncaster came through the ranks at Loretto School and North Berwick RFC before heading south for a scholarship at Rugby School.

The back-row returned to the Scottish capital in June 2020 and made his professional debut in the Rainbow Cup win over Zebre Parma in April 2021.

Muncaster enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2021/22 with a Player of the Match performance in the historic away victory over Hollywoodbets Sharks at Kings Park a highlight moment for the burgeoning back-row.

Muncaster powers through against Benetton

Muncaster is now gearing up to face rivals Glasgow Warriors this Sunday, encounters the back-row describes as ‘electric.’

He continued: “These derbies are always massive occasions. The atmosphere is electric, and the whole city gets behind the games. It’s always an honour to represent Edinburgh in the 1872 Cup derbies.”

Head Coach Sean Everitt added: “Ben [Muncaster] is a hugely important player for this club, and we’re delighted that he has committed his future to Edinburgh.

“He’s a powerful ball-carrier, a strong defender, and a real competitor. Securing the services of one of Scotland’s best young back-rowers is a major boost for the club.”
