Record crowd to roar at 1872 Cup

26 Dec 2023

A record-breaking crowd of over 30,000 will roar on the decisive 1872 Cup match between Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow Warriors this Saturday at Scottish Gas Murrayfield (30 December, kick-off 3pm) it was confirmed today.

The attendance raced past the previous record of 27,437 (2019) before Christmas, with increasing daily demand for tickets expected in the four days leading up to the game.

Supporters are encouraged to act now to secure the best view and best value seats in the stadium amidst the unprecedented demand. All ticket purchased online are delivered straight to the Scottish Rugby ticketing app after purchase and can be purchased on the day.

Reacting to the record crowd, Edinburgh Rugby Managing Director Douglas Struth said:

“As the excitement for Saturday’s derby decider continues to build, we’re delighted to confirm a record attendance for an 1872 Cup fixture, with ticket sales racing over the 30,000 mark this afternoon, still four days out from the match.

“This is an incredible achievement and testament to both the huge amount of work that has gone on behind the scenes to promote the fixture, as well as the support of our fans, whose passion and hunger to back the team has been nothing short of incredible all season long.

Struth continued: “We’re proud to represent Scotland’s capital city and it will be a moment to savour, for all connected to the club, to see a record-crowd backing Edinburgh Rugby in the 1872 Cup decider this Saturday.”

The 1872 Cup – The Auld Acquaintance

Scotland’s biggest stars go head-to-head for the coveted 1872 Cup and crucial BKT United Rugby Championship points.

With the match returning to its traditional festive spot, an earlier kick-off of 3pm and four live music acts providing the soundtrack to the pre-match build-up, the 1872 Cup is the perfect chance to get the whole family together to kickstart Hogmanay celebrations.

The men’s clash is also part of an historic double-header at Scottish Gas Murrayfield that sees an inaugural women’s inter-city derby take place in Hive Stadium earlier in the day, as Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow Warriors women’s teams face off in Hive Stadium at 12 noon.

Fans can upgrade their 1872 Cup matchday by supporting the club across both teams.

Tickets for Edinburgh Rugby women’s matches are priced at £10 for adults and £5 for U16s (inclusive of order processing fee).

Please note the men’s and women’s derby matches are ticketed separately. A ticket for one will not grant access to the other.
