“I’m incredibly proud to have got here” – McVie steps up to first pro deal

Edinburgh Rugby is delighted to announce lock Euan McVie has stepped up to his first professional contract with the club.

The 21-year-old graduates from the club’s academy to join the already-announced quartet of Ollie Blyth-Lafferty, Jack Brown, Hector Patterson and Jerry Blyth-Lafferty in penning pro deals this season, continuing Edinburgh’s rich pipeline of homegrown talent into the senior squad.

McVie made his professional debut from the bench in January, coming on in the Investec Champions Cup victory over Gloucester at Hive Stadium – becoming Edinburgh player #1350 – as theclub claimed a dramatic 26-24 win.

He then featured again from the bench in the Round 4 Champions Cup clash with Bath as Edinburgh sealed their place in the last 16 of the European competition.

The lock has rugby in his blood. His father, Malcolm McVie, played for Edinburgh District and Edinburgh Accies in the early 1990s.

Euan grew up watching him ply his trade at Raeburn Place – an experience that ignited a passion for the game and a drive to one day pull on the capital jersey himself.

On stepping up, McVie said: “It’s an unbelievable feeling. To step up to a pro deal with your hometown club is something I’ve worked towards for a long time, and I’m incredibly proud to have got here.

“It’s been brilliant to see so many of the other young guys step up to pro deals and get real game time this season – that gives you massive confidence that the pathway is there if you put the work in.”

He added: “Making my debut and pulling on the Edinburgh jersey for the first time is something I’ll never forget.

“Obviously there’s something pretty special about following in my dad’s footsteps too. He’s been part of this club’s story and now I get the chance to write my own chapter. I know how much that means to both of us.”

Head Coach Sean Everitt said: “Euan is a player we’re really excited about. He has all the physical attributes to make his mark at this level. He’s a big, powerful lock who carries well and competes hard.

“He’s part of a crop of really talented youngsters who are coming through, and it will be great to see him put in a summer of hard work and come back in pre-season to hit the ground running.

“The opportunity is there for him to push on and become a real force in this squad.”
