Edinburgh Rugby is delighted to announce that back-row Freddy Douglas has been voted the Scottish Building Society Player of the Month for January.
Douglas takes home the award following a stellar start to the year, where his world-class breakdown skills and tireless work rate saw him claim two Player of the Match awards and cement his reputation as one of the most dangerous jackal threats in world rugby.
The young openside began 2026 with a masterclass in Treviso.
Douglas was a constant menace at the breakdown, securing several crucial turnovers to help Edinburgh clinch a historic 14-15 victory over Benetton – the club’s first away win at Stadio Monigo since 2017. His efforts earned him the BKT Player of the Match award.
Douglas followed that performance with a heroic display in the Investec Champions Cup.
With Edinburgh trailing by 13 points at half-time, Douglas recorded five jackal turnovers to spark a stunning 26-24 bonus-point comeback victory over Gloucester.
The win secured Edinburgh’s place in the Round of 16 and earned Douglas his second Player of the Match trophy in as many weeks.
Despite tough results against Bath, Vodacom Bulls, and Leinster, Douglas remained a standout performer.
Statistically, he continues to lead the professional game for jackal turnovers per minute played, highlighted by a four-turnover performance against the Bulls at Hive Stadium.
As part of the award, Scottish Building Society has donated £500 to Douglas’s former grassroots mini-rugby team, Stew Mel Lions.
This initiative continues to highlight the vital pathway from youth rugby to the professional ranks in Edinburgh.
Douglas commented on the award and the donation: “I’m incredibly proud to be named the Scottish Building Society Player of the Month, especially knowing it was voted for by the fans.
“To have that kind of backing from the people in the stands is special – it means a lot to me and the boys.
“I’m really enjoying my rugby right now. Being a local lad, I love contributing to my hometown team.
“We’ve got a great group of young, up-and-coming guys here and the squad feels closer than ever. I’m genuinely excited for what we can achieve in the second half of the season.”
He continued: “I’m also massively grateful to Scottish Building Society for their donation to Stew Mel Lions. It’s brilliant that they continue to back grassroots rugby.
“That money will go a long way for the mini team, and I hope it helps with their fundraising efforts for their annual tour – some of my best rugby memories came from those trips.”
Edinburgh Rugby Head Coach, Sean Everitt, added: “Freddy has been exceptional throughout January. His ability at the breakdown is special, but it’s his work ethic and consistency that really stand out.
“He is a fantastic example to every young player in our academy of the pathway available to play for your hometown club.
“Freddy has a very bright future ahead of him, and we hope to see him putting in these kinds of performances in an Edinburgh jersey for many years to come.”
