Edinburgh Rugby and Scottish Building Society unite for inclusive festival
Edinburgh Rugby hosted their third inclusive rugby festival in partnership with Main Club Partner Scottish Building Society last month, with the event taking place ahead of the team's BKT United Rugby Championship clash with Cardiff Rugby.
The festival was a resounding success, bringing together five inclusive rugby teams on the day: Edinburgh Inclusive Rugby Team, Ayrshire Clan, Borders Clan, Fife Clan, and Strathie Clan.
With over 100 players participating, the festival was a celebration of rugby for all. The event showcased the power of sport to unite people of all abilities and backgrounds, while members from all five teams were honoured ahead of kick-off as they delivered the match ball in front of the Hive Stadium faithful.
Edinburgh Rugby Community Manager Ruaridh Pye expressed his delight at the success of the festival: “It was fantastic to see so many players involved in our latest inclusive rugby festival.
“The atmosphere was electric, and it was a privilege to honour the players with a ball delivery ahead of kick-off. These events are crucial in promoting inclusivity and accessibility within rugby, and we’re committed to continuing to grow and develop this initiative.”
James Moncur, Head Coach of The Fife Clan Unified team was full of praise for Edinburgh Rugby.
He said: “What another fantastic day’s rugby at HQ for all our mixed ability players.
“It’s always a superbly organised and run event where playing and enjoying rugby in a super-safe environment is at the top of the priority list.
“Teams attended from all across Scotland to take part and we all had a top day. The standard of play during unified matches has also significantly improved and the number of new players is a sure sign that we’re all heading in the right direction.
The Edinburgh tournament perfectly illustrated that rugby is truly a sport for all shapes, sizes and abilities. We can’t wait for the next one. Onwards and upwards!”
Scottish Building Society Chief Executive Officer Paul Denton emphasised the importance of inclusivity and Scottish Building Society’s commitment to supporting such initiatives.
“We’re incredibly proud to partner with Edinburgh Rugby to make events like this possible. Rugby is a sport for everyone, and it’s vital to create opportunities for people of all abilities to participate.
“We’re committed to fostering a more inclusive society, and this festival is a perfect example of how sport can bring people together.”
Edinburgh Rugby is committed to hosting more inclusive festivals with the support of Scottish Building Society, with plans already underway for the next inclusive festival in 2025.
