Scottish Building Society Player of the Month September nominees announced

3 Oct 2024

The nominees for the first Scottish Building Society Player of the Month of the season have today been announced, with a quartet of players selected by the coaching staff as the standouts in September.

Wing Duhan van der Merwe, prop Paul Hill, lockMarshall Sykes, and back-row Jamie Ritchie have all caught the eye in the opening rounds of the BKT United Rugby Championship, and fans once again get the opportunity to vote for the player they deem worthy of the award.

The winning player will be able to donate £500 – courtesy of Scottish Building Society – to a charity of their choice from our main club partner’s foundation.

Duhan van der Merwe

The club’s giant winger has started the season in electric form, bagging a brace of tries against Leinster at Hive Stadium, before carrying for a team-high 101m against the Bulls, beating three defenders in the process.

Chosen charity: Dr Bell’s Family Centre

Paul Hill

New signing Paul Hill has taken to the capital scrum like a duck to water, starting both games, and helping the pack draw multiple penalties against both opposition scrums. Hill excelled against the fearsome pack of the Vodacom Bulls, dominating the set piece at Loftus Versfeld.

Chosen charity: Greener Peebles

Marshall Sykes

Sykes has come into his own this season, earning two full eighty-minute performances so far this season. The lock lives up to the reputation of second-rows being the ‘engine room’ of the team, putting in huge efforts to keep the team moving in the right direction.

Chosen charity: Dr Bell’s Family Centre

Jamie Ritchie

Back-row Ritchie has continued his excellent form that saw him become Scottish Building Society Player of the Season in 2023/24. A constant menace at the breakdown, the Scotland cap has won multiple vital turnovers with the team protecting their goal line.

Chosen charity: Dr Bell’s Family Centre
