Goosen and Walker scoop top prizes at Edinburgh Rugby Season Awards

22 May 2025

Wes Goosen and Hannah Walker were the big winners at Wednesday night's 2024/25 Edinburgh Rugby Season Awards held at Scottish Gas Murrayfield.

Back-three star Wes Goosen was crowned Scottish Building Society Player of the Season after a truly exceptional campaign.

Goosen has been an ever-present force, featuring in nearly every minute of every game, showcasing his consistent high-level performance.

This prestigious award adds to an already successful period for Goosen, who signed a new two-year deal with the club last month and was also voted Players’ Player of the Season by his teammates in an internal vote following the team’s last regular match of the season.

Hannah Walker was named It’s Good 2 Give Women’s Player of the Season following an equally impressive season for the club’s women’s team.

Walker’s prolific try-scoring saw her notch up 11 tries, finishing as the Celtic Challenge top try-scorer in 2024/25.

This accolade caps a successful year for Walker, who was also named in the Women’s BUCS Super Rugby Team of the Season for her outstanding performances for The University of Edinburgh.

In the evening’s only fan-voted award, departing co-captain Jamie Ritchie proudly lifted The Caullie Lug.

This iconic trophy, shaped and moulded after the legendary Allan ‘Chunk’ Jacobsen’s cauliflower ear, recognises outstanding commitment to the club.

Ritchie, who will join Perpignan at the end of the season, follows in the footsteps of Roddy Grant, Ross Ford, and last year’s recipient, WP Nel, in receiving this beloved award, a testament to his dedication to his boyhood club.

For the second consecutive year, Freddy Douglas was recognised as the Pro-Academy Player of the Season, highlighting another successful year of development.

Douglas made his Scotland debut during last November’s Autumn Nations Series, earned Player of the Match honours for Scotland ‘A’ against Chile, and capped off the month with his senior debut for Edinburgh, becoming the club’s 1336th player.

Rob Carmichael received the Breadalbane Our Burgh Community Award for his outstanding and consistent commitment to the local community, demonstrating a true dedication beyond the field.

Rounding off the awards, Charlie Shiel’s spectacular solo effort against Connacht earlier this month was voted the Vision Scotland Men’s Try of the Season.

Meanwhile, Lucia Scott claimed the Vision Scotland Women’s Try of the Season for her brilliant finish following a fantastic team move against Glasgow Warriors.

Edinburgh Rugby Head Coach Sean Everitt extended his congratulations to all the award winners: “I want to offer my sincere congratulations to all our award winners tonight.

“Each recipient has demonstrated fantastic contributions to Edinburgh Rugby throughout the 2024/25 season, both on and off the pitch. Their hard work, dedication, and talent are a true credit to the club, and they are all thoroughly deserving of their accolades.”
