Hive Stadium to host men’s Scottish Varsity for second year

26 Jun 2025

Hive Stadium, the home of Edinburgh Rugby, will once again host the Men’s Scottish Varsity Rugby Match between The University of St Andrews RFC and Edinburgh University RFC on Saturday 20 September (kick-off 2pm), with tickets now on sale.

This marks the second consecutive year the highly anticipated fixture returns to Hive Stadium, building on the success of last year’s event which saw a crowd of over 4,500 spectators attend the historic match-up.

The 2024 clash saw The University of St Andrews emerge victorious over The University of Edinburgh with a final score of 24-13.

Thanks to the continued partnership between Edinburgh Rugby and The University of Edinburgh, this iconic fixture will once again take centre stage at the club’s home, with both Universities setting their sights on a sell-out crowd.

The celebrated match between Scotland’s two oldest university rugby clubs boasts a history stretching back over 160 years, predating even the renowned Oxford vs Cambridge Varsity Match.

Formed in 1857 and 1858 respectively, Edinburgh University RFC and St Andrews RFC are among the oldest rugby clubs in the world, with only Edinburgh Academical FC having a longer continuous history in Scotland.

Douglas Struth, Edinburgh Rugby Managing Director, said: “We are incredibly proud to once again host the historic Men’s Scottish Varsity Rugby Match at Hive Stadium.

“This fixture is a brilliant showcase of our partnership with The University of Edinburgh and highlights the strong rugby talent within Scotland’s Universities.

“I encourage all Edinburgh Rugby fans, alongside students from both the University of Edinburgh and the University of St Andrews, to secure their tickets and be part of what promises to be another thrilling day of rugby.”
