Denholm-born scrum-half Hector Patterson first picked up a rugby ball at Jed-Forest RFC, playing all his youth rugby in the Borders.
He then moved to Hawick RFC, where he was part of the side that won the 2022/23 Premiership title.
Rugby runs deep in the family: his father, Derrick, also a scrum-half and Hawick product, won two Scotland caps in the 1990s, played at the 1995 Rugby World Cup and represented Edinburgh.
Patterson joined the Edinburgh-aligned FOSROC Scottish Rugby Academy ahead of the 2023/24 season, also gaining FOSROC Super Series experience with Watsonians.
That November he was named on the bench for the URC clash with Leinster. He was a key member of the Scotland U20 side that won the 2024 World Rugby U20 Trophy on home soil at Hive Stadium, and went on to feature at the 2025 World Rugby U20 Championship in Italy.
After overcoming a string of injuries, he made his professional debut starting against Zebre Parma at Hive Stadium in April 2026.
He scored a try in a dramatic 31-30 win and signed his first professional contract days later. He started the final four games of 2025/26, scoring in each of his first two.
Patterson has made the number nine jersey his own at the start of 2026/27, starting each of Edinburgh’s opening URC fixtures and scoring in the season-opening win at Ulster.
In October 2026 he signed a new, improved deal running to the end of the 2027/28 season. That same week he was named Player of the Match in the home win over the Fidelity SecureDrive Lions, with his flick pass setting up a try for Mosese Tuipulotu.
