Born in the South African city of East London, Goosen moved to New Zealand with his family aged four, settling first in Auckland before moving south to Wellington.

A New Zealand Schools representative in 2013, he went on to play for New Zealand U20, helping the Baby Blacks win the 2015 Oceania Rugby U20 Championship.

Goosen made his provincial debut for Wellington in the 2014 ITM Cup and broke into Super Rugby with the Hurricanes in 2016.

Equally at home on the wing, at outside centre and at full-back, he scored 30 tries in 66 Super Rugby appearances for the Wellington side, including eight in 13 games in a breakout 2019 season.

He joined Edinburgh ahead of the 2022/23 season. After an injury-disrupted first campaign, Goosen returned to form in his second, topping the club’s carry metres and defenders-beaten charts.

He was voted Scottish Building Society Player of the Month for December 2023 and won the Breadalbane Players’ Player of the Season award for 2023/24.

He took his game to another level in 2024/25. Taking over the full-back jersey, he started every one of Edinburgh’s first 18 matches and scored tries in the EPCR Challenge Cup against Gloucester, Vannes and Black Lion.

He brought up his 50th Edinburgh appearance in the Challenge Cup Round of 16 win over the Emirates Lions, and was voted Player of the Month for March.

At the end of the campaign he was crowned Scottish Building Society Player of the Season, having also been voted Players’ Player of the Season by his teammates, as Edinburgh returned to the URC play-offs.

That form earned him a new two-year deal, which keeps him in the capital until 2027, when he will become Scotland-qualified on residency.
